Cook's Illustrated Unframed Print: Hard Candy

Over the past 20 years, renowned illustrator John Burgoyne has produced more than 150 intricate, hand-drawn illustrations for Cook’s Illustrated magazine. Now, for the first time ever, America’s Test Kitchen is proud to partner with Mr. Burgoyne and offer a select number of fine art prints featuring this iconic artwork.
Hard candies are likely descendants of herb lozenges, elixirs more popular for their taste than their healing properties. Horehound candy, made from the aromatic relative of mint, was touted as a soothing cure-all. Likewise, the health benefit of honey and tea candies made them longtime drugstore favorites. Even candy sticks, the barber pole-like treats, were first offered in sassafras and wintergreen flavors for medicinal purposes. But not all hard candy has therapeutic roots. Rock candy, fluorescent stalactites, adn its cousin cut rock candy, tiny canvases displaying flavor clues, are pure indulgence. The same can be said for cinnamon impreials, pea-sized drops of spicy sweetness. French fruit bonbons traditionally endlose real jam; the crisp outer shell of most American versions hides a gushing center of saccharine goo. Butter toffee is typically wrapped in shimmering gold foil to hint at the carmel treat within. Pretty ribbon candy is folded while hot to obtain its undulations.
